Meet Gustavo! (The RV)A toast to Galicia with our favorite Spanish wine so far. Coto Imaz 2016 or something
Refinishing Louis’ old guitar. It used to be red but we painted it white. SickkkkWooow we look so young in this one.. feels like forever ago. Back in Emil’s basement studio. Not looking forward to moving back down there for the Fall but we need to record and this place is the only way for us to get decent sound quality. MehEmil spent a lot of summers out here in Bad Aussee as a child. We took on a medium sized mountain and wrote a bunch of vocals out there. Good times, except for Frau Spitzel’s shenanigans. We took a trip to Almeria back in 2019, our favorite town in Andalucia.Anuncios aqui no. Torre aqui no. Hablar aqui no.It used to be quite difficult for us to get pics of us both, we’ve gotten a lot better tho. These were taken by our lawyer Thomas.Dramatic light and dramatic LouBananeVery rare pic of Emil in Innermanzing, our friend Alex’s house. The first beat we ever made together was done in this house. We recorded a bus stop jingle on the way there and flipped it into a beat. Big memories. The very beginnings of our VHS camera journey. This Panasonic M1 shot was one of very few we got before the thing broke for no reason.. We had so much fun tho. Our VHS rig today is on a whole different level, might post it at some point.Emil “working on” Gustavo’s predecessor “Taiga”. Definitely did not try to fit the darn thing into a garage that was too low and damaged the roof. Did not happen.. ever.Lou throwing stones in Croatia. Our friend Patrick’s grandma has a place there so we went down every summer for a while. The opening shot for the “making of cinematic youth ep” video was taken there. And some other ones.Lots of takes for tracks on the CY ep were recorded in La Herradura, Andalucia. And Louis had a good morning xDAlso rare, a pic of Emil recording vocals back in the day. Terrible mic we don’t use anymore. Don’t buy the Rode NT1-A if you plan on having S and T sounds in your vocals.Lou on his old guitar before we painted it white. Likely recording something for a demo that would eventually become “The Unknown” about two years later.A cheap Zoom guitar pedal that we used for the pitchy guitar lead on “The Unknown”. Ignore the filth.Winters are cold in Vienna, one of the reasons we want to move somewhere else. Establish a new base with a nice studio in a warm place.. dreams. Lou filming on our Panasonic M5.We’ve sold almost all of the equipment in this pic. Bunch of junk haha but got a lot of use back then.Captain Lou in Bad Aussee. A few of the clips we used in the “Taro La” music video were taken here.So pretty out there. Blaa Alm.Lou on the keys, probably recording a synth lead for one of our lofi tracks. Thank god the lofi days are long gone. Dark times tbh.Emil tried to mix/master all 14 of our lofi beats on a trip to LA. Terrible idea lol, especially on headphones this bad. We had to re-do everything when we were back in Vienna.Late nights in the basement studio. Pretty sure we were mixing some lofi records at this point. Our Cali Audio speakers were a big upgrade from the bass-less 90s hifi speakers we used before.Lou on Emil’s first guitar. Actually belongs to his mum but it’s the instrument he wrote his first songs and learned to play guitar on.This man needs a tan. There’s a desert behind Almeria. Lou is strong and fierce.Working on the beat for “Dazed” on the “peach tinted” ep in Almeria. We used to make tons of beats at once and then had to finish songs way after they were started. Fun, but we’re looking forward to starting and finishing songs quicker so they’re not as stale in our minds. No earring, no hair, who is this :O Almeria. Two babyfaces casually chilling at the beach. This is our vintage casio synth. Nothing special, but one of the last truly analog units they made back in the 80s. Lou’s hair also looks like it was made in the 80s LOLEmil did not in fact have frosted tips, he had just returned from his first surf trip and he’s a summertime blonde. Also we just picked up our Casio synth. On the way from Bad Aussee to Vienna we craved Chinese food and stumbled upon Dong’s Cooking, one of the most reputable restaurants in Austria. Loads of Garlic mmmh.Yes we drink pure chicken broth in the Winter, which makes us INVINCIBLE. Believe it.This is known as Louis’ signature photo pose. Very classy, right?Recording vocals for the “peach tinted” EP. Louis manning the console like a champ. YES.It gets hot and steamy in the studio some times. We took some pics in front of Louis’ Brother’s projector. One of Emil’s birthdays. Louis gifted him “Surf Ears”, which help protect your hearing while surfing and getting smashed by waves. He lost them instanty. The day we got our EARS PIERCED!! We were super stoked on the look, even though we hadn’t even put in our proper hoops yet (the ones we wear now).We always take a lot of pics for our covers and then try to decide on one together. This is the picture Emil liked the most but we didn’t end up using it cause it was less dynamic than the one we went with. This is one of the pictures we took on the day of the “peach tinted” EP’s cover shoot. Pretty wild how different the final cover looks, we had to change the colors quite a bit and remove the background. This is our old old rig, the one we started out with. Long time ago and would not want to go back to this lol. This is the bungalow we stayed in during our three months in El Palmar. Tiny but perfect. So many memories here, it’s crazy. Our bungalow in El Palmar, Andalusia had the cutest patio with the most amazing ocean view. We’d have lunch and dinner there and sometimes sip a tiiiny bit of wine.We bought this coffee maker for our bungalow and have kept it to this day. We’re big coffee heads. This was a bbq device we bought for 15 bucks and used once.. definitely not the worst potatoes ever. Nope.We had so much fun in the bungalow. Especially when watching football. LASK LINZ. REINHOLD RANFTL. RENE RENNEREmil shared his room with one of his surf boards. Should have kept both of them inside cause the cat tore up his soft top in the yard. Oh well. This is called tortilla de patatas. It’s one of our favorite Spanish dishes and Louis makes a mean one. He has modified the recipe by adding zucchini and diced bacon. We took this pic by the main road in El Palmar. A bunch of people drove by and stared at us. Do Spanish people stare more than others? We think so.We took our friend Alex to the airport in Malaga and then napped in Gustavo (the RV) under some palm trees. Big cliché.Louis (Aka Santana / Gary Moore / Slash)THIS IS CRUNCH. One of our new breakfast staples. Try it if you can, we recommend. MERCADONA 4 life.Emil driving Gustavo down in Tarifa. Overheated slightly when climbing the hill but oh well.Cortegaca (Portugal). Not the warmest place. We felt like we were on a different planet most of the time because everything felt strange and unreal. Super empty, nobody around and terrible weather in JULY.. howwwwMore Cortegaca (Portugal). The Oil Man. Lou catching some rays on the balcony in Cortegaca. Emil paddling for a wave in Portugal.. did he make it we’ll never knowMental breakdown at the Parque SerralvesLouis is a pool master. Unbeatable. Playing at the Tüta bar in Esmoriz, Portugal.Winter in El Palmar. Cold and rainy but the sun came through from time to time. Stray dogs all over the beach but they were super friendly.Lou has an old analog camera that doesn’t like to focus on close objects, but the viiibes are priceless.More blurry analog pics.“Summer vibes dude”. This was actually shot in summer 2019 in CroatiaDefinitely shooting on our new VHS rig and not doing anything else.. Super secret gear, we’ll never tell and nobody will ever ask hahaRecording guitars for the “peach tinted” ep. Lou is super focused. We built the walls that form the corner behind the amp out of rockwool, they work wonders for sound quality. Quality that would immediately get tarnished by the ancient audio interface we were using. Shooting in El Palmar. This was a few meters from our bungalow.Good morning Louis 2.0. Our bungalow didn’t have large enough bowls for Lou’s breakfast so he would eat out of an empty 1kg yoghurt tub. In German we call it “Trog” which is something like trough.🐽Btw, we are Austrian so we speak German when we’re talking to each other.Lou got a new guitar!! The brand is top secret! But it plays like a dream and looks like one too.Apparently Emil doesn’t know how to use a bike.Putting solar panels on Gustavo’s roof. Done too many van conversions, never again.. ok maybe one more time for our future tour bus. Dreams.Gustavo lost a mirror😥 so we got a new one and took tiny mirror pics.Emil bought a surf board in the Austrian alps before driving down to Spain for the winter. Snow to ocean is quite the shift. (there is no surf in Austria, just so you know)Finally arrived in El Palmar. Gustavo carried all of our music equipment like a champ. At that point we didn’t know that the engine was shot.. would become a costly reality check soon though. We got him fixed and he’s better than ever now.Emil working on the road (inside Gustavo). Balancing music with an internship and writing a bachelor’s thesis ain’t easy.Louis shooting on the new rig next to the bungalow in El Palmar. This is where the stray cats would chill before hopping up onto our porch and begging for food. We did feed them a bunch of times so they would stop bothering us but that lead to nothing at all.Outdoor work session. Emil writing code and Louis doing University stuff. We are soo excited for the Fall of 2021 where we can finally work on music full time, without any distractions. One of our first beach walks this past winter in El Palmar.Aaaaaahh the views from our bungalow were insane. Literally perfect. We could walk down to the beach in under 5 mins and surf there or just watch the sunset.New surfboard alert!!! Louis bought it online and it was shipped in one piece, which is very rare for boards. He was a happy boi.Post surf session. Super tired but totally worth it, especially if you get to enjoy these views (not only talking about Lou)One of our mixing/mastering sessions for the “peach tinted” EP. Mixing this project was super difficult, definitely the hardest thing we’ve done. It took forever and was done in so many different places it’s hard to keep count. We did finally finish it in El Palmar after having gone completely insane about five separate times. Mixing is really hard on the psyche because comparison is such an essential part of it. You have to listen to other people’s mixes to know if your own mix is any good. And then you start comparing your music to other people’s music which is NOT healthy.Big shopping in Conil. The Coviran (Vanna) supermarket in El Palmar didn’t have all the stuff we like so from time to time we would cycle to Conil and shop at Mercadona, the best supermarket ever. BOYCOTT LIDL. Jamon, Salmon, Fuet and Crunch are some of our favorite items there. There was a MASSIVE SNAKE in our garden in El Palmar. NOT A JOKE it was huge. We saw it a couple of times and we’re pretty sure it wasn’t venomous. Still scary tho 😮Our pride and joy, the best VHS camera ever. Insane colors and instant vibes. You haven’t seen a sunset unless you’ve seen it through this thing. A music video consisting of clips shot on this beauty will be posted somewhere soon. Fun fact Springer means “jumper / the one who jumps” in German. And that’s exactly what Louis was doing here in Conil. Actually we wanted to take some pics together in this corner but Emil hated his look so we skipped. We used our bikes to get around in El Palmar. At firs Gustavo was at the mechanic for weeks and besides, bikes are the best form of transport anyway. We often look back on the times we didn’t have a car and feel like those were the days, stuck in Palmar but still we felt super free.Sunsets at the beach were crazy. The El Palmar beach faces West. Louis was enjoying himself.Lou chilling in the yard. Where are his clothes?Kardashian sunset light hack.Louis in front of our favorite store MERCADONA in Conil. There’s a small hipster cafe in town called “la mesa imperfecta”. Check it out if you’re ever there, the owner is super nice. After trying to be a musician for years, producing music since 2013, Emil finally bought proper headphones. Who knew, it’s easier to create good sounds with good phones. Wow. Another case of the Yoghurt tub being used as a trough. Big food for big boys right.. Home made poke bowls. It just tasts different when you buy your fish fresh from the store. Healthy. The gate to the property our bungalow was on was broken and would get stuck when shut. Louis holding it open while Emil gets the bikes.Trying out our new recording rig on the porch. We switched to a completely different system that isn’t very common anymore. Going for the best digitization possible and sacrificing coloration by great preamps. Our high school friend Alex came to visit down in Palmar. Fun fact, the three of us once had a music project together but nobody will ever know what it was called. Impossible to find anyway. One of the drawbacks of bungalow life were the mosquitos. Emil going in on them with the swatter. The LEDs on our VHS camcorder turned out to be mixed up and Lou sometimes forgot about that, thinking he filmed something while actually nothing was recorded. sad! Louis makes an insanely good Salmon steak. Crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Crazy.Louis putting Emil’s Hoop back in between surf sessions. Turns out Emil’s earlobe is too thick for regular hoops lolWe went to a museum of modern art in Porto, Portugal. It was surprisingly good. Amazing actually. Another fun fact while we’re at it, we’re the exact same height, both of us are 6’1Outdoor gym time!! Eat big to get big. I know we’re classy with our water bottle weights.Louis is HUGE. Vigo is a city in Galicia, the place we had our first pulpo of the year. Pulpo is our favorite Spanish dish hands down. We love food.Free camping in Galicia on our trip from Portugal to northern Spain, cheers Louis!Lou getting excited for some good surf out in Razo da Costa, Galicia. Super rural area so big houses are cheap. We have a separate music room and all that but we sit in the kitchen all day and work haha. Also we surf and run, gotta stay in shape. This incredible tattoo design was made by the super talented @nilo_arrieta on insta. Inspired by our song “Cinematic Youth”.
